AgResearch Facility – Tuhiraki

As a ‘super subcontractor’ for Naylor Love, Protranz delivered comprehensive site works for the new 25,000m2 AgResearch facility at Lincoln University.

The project showcased Protranz’s full-service capabilities across civil construction, drainage, transport, asbestos remediation and building works.

Project Scope

  • Initial site remediation and asbestos contamination management
  • Bulk earthworks totalling 21,000 tonnes
  • Installation of complex underground services including specialised chemical processing tanks and a 4m deep wet well pumping station
  • Construction of car parks, stormwater management systems and landscaping
  • Cultural integration working alongside Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahu and Ngāti Porou artists

Technical Innovation

The project required innovative solutions for several challenges. Protranz used BIM modelling to optimize the design and installation of underground services in extremely tight spaces.

The team also developed creative methods to transport landscaping materials through and over the building structure to complete the central courtyard, including using conveyors and cranes to move materials into hard-to-reach areas.

Environmental & Cultural Excellence

The project demonstrated Protranz’s commitment to environmental stewardship and cultural sensitivity. The team implemented comprehensive erosion and sediment controls while working with local artists to incorporate significant cultural elements into the landscaping and design features. The finished facility seamlessly integrates with the university campus while celebrating local cultural heritage.

Project Success

Despite significant timeline challenges, Protranz delivered the external works under an accelerated programme that enabled the main contractor to meet their original handover date.

The quality of work and attention to detail resulted in a facility that the local community can be proud of.

This project exemplifies Protranz’s ability to handle complex, multi-faceted projects requiring careful coordination, technical innovation, and cultural sensitivity while maintaining the highest standards of safety and environmental protection.

From initial site remediation through to final landscaping, we demonstrated why we’re one of the leading earthworks and civil construction contractors in the country.
