Court Theatre

In late 2021, Protranz successfully completed critical early works for the new Court Theatre building involving complex ground decontamination and site preparation in a sensitive central city location.

Our experienced team, extensive fleet, and end-to-end capability saw us successfully deliver what was a complex site remediation and civil project.

The challenge

The site required careful removal of varying levels of contamination, including asbestos-containing materials, while maintaining strict environmental controls given its location adjacent to key facilities like Te Pae Convention Centre and Tūranga Library.

Our solution

Protranz took the lead on the:

  • Installation of sheet piling along property boundaries to enable safe excavation
  • Removal of approximately 1,480m³ of asbestos-contaminated material
  • Management of 1,110m³ of other contaminated materials
  • Construction of a 1.0m engineered gravel raft foundation
  • Implementation of comprehensive dust and environmental controls

Why it succeeded

The project showcased our ability to:

  • Successfully manage complex contamination issues in an urban environment
  • Work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, including the council and neighbours
  • Maintain strict health, safety and environmental standards
  • Leverage previous experience on similar central city projects like Te Pae and Tūranga
  • Complete works efficiently while minimising disruption to surrounding businesses
